What is a Coaxial Cylinder Viscometer?

A coaxial cylinder viscometer (also known as a Couette viscometer) is an instrument designed to measure the viscosity of liquids by analyzing how they resist flow between two concentric cylinders. The setup consists of a stationary outer cylinder (the cup) and a rotating inner cylinder (the bob). The liquid sample fills the narrow gap between these two cylinders.

When the inner cylinder rotates, the fluid in the gap is sheared. The viscometer measures the torque required to keep the cylinder in motion, and from this resistance, the viscosity of the liquid is calculated. Because the geometry is well defined, the shear rate distribution in the fluid can be precisely determined, making this design particularly suitable for studying both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

FAQs for Coaxial Cylinder Viscometers

A coaxial cylinder viscometer is unique because its enclosed “cup and bob” design creates a large, defined shear area. This makes it extremely sensitive for low-viscosity fluids and prevents evaporation of volatile samples, providing highly accurate, absolute viscosity measurements.
Its design creates a large surface area where the fluid contacts the bob. This amplifies the tiny rotational resistance (torque) from thin fluids, turning a weak signal into a strong, measurable, and repeatable reading for accurate results.
The choice depends on the industry standard your customer must follow. DIN systems are often required in the European paint and coatings industry. ISO is a more general, global standard. The difference is the specific dimensions of the cup and bob.
A coaxial cylinder viscometer is suitable for particle-containing samples, but only if the particle size is small relative to the gap between the cylinders.
