A cone and plate viscometer is a precision instrument used to measure the viscosity of liquids under well-defined shear conditions. It consists of a flat, stationary plate and a shallow-angle cone that rotates in close contact with the plate. A small sample of liquid is placed between the cone and plate, forming a thin, uniform film.
When the cone rotates, the liquid experiences a uniform shear rate across the entire sample. The instrument measures the torque needed to maintain the cone’s motion, and from this resistance, the viscosity is calculated. Because the shear rate is constant, the cone and plate design provides highly accurate and reproducible viscosity values.
